This mug design forms part of a wider series of modern, flat reinterpretations of Welsh surnames as coats of arms — not drawn from any official heraldry, but carefully built from meaning, symbolism and a bit of creative interpretation. Beynon is a Welsh surname derived from “ap Einion” meaning “son of Einion.” The etymology of Einion is commonly linked to the Welsh word for anvil, carrying associations of strength, steadiness and endurance. That idea sits at the centre of the design. The shield is divided cleanly into blue and gold. In heraldic tradition, blue is often associated with loyalty, truth and constancy, while gold suggests worth, generosity and resilience. The gold field gives a sense of solidity and weight, while the blue brings a steadier balance. At the centre, the anvil and hammer make the name’s meaning explicit. It is not decorative symbolism but purposeful imagery. The anvil suggests something that can take pressure and still hold its shape. The hammer speaks to labour, repetition and craft. Together they point to a surname built around fortitude rather than fuss. The small geometric detail beneath keeps things grounded — a subtle nod to structure and precision rather than ornament. Bold lines, flat colour and a stripped-back composition give it a modern crest feel. There is a quiet confidence to it: nothing overstated, just something solid, well made and built to last.
