This mug design forms part of a wider series of modern, flat reinterpretations of Welsh surnames as coats of arms — not taken from any official heraldry, but carefully built from meaning, symbolism and a bit of creative interpretation. Davies is one of the most recognisable Welsh patronymic surnames, derived from “ap Dafydd” meaning “son of Dafydd.” Dafydd is the Welsh form of David, a name whose etymology is linked to “beloved.” It also carries a deep national association through St David, the patron saint of Wales. That combination of personal meaning and national identity shapes the design. The shield is built around a bold cross, dividing the space into four equal quarters. This gives the composition structure, balance and a sense of permanence, while also quietly reflecting the religious associations connected to the name Dafydd. Within each quarter sit bees, used as a subtle nod to St David. According to legend, the Irish monk Modomnoc tended bees at David’s monastery in Wales. When he later returned to Ireland, the bees followed him and settled on his boat. After attempts to send them back, David is said to have blessed the bees and allowed them to remain with Modomnoc. Here, the bees represent quiet industry, order and endurance — something small, repeated and lasting. Bold lines and flat colour keep the design modern, while the overall structure leans into older ecclesiastical and heraldic forms. It has the feel of something established, but thoughtfully reimagined.
