This design forms part of the wider series of modern Welsh surname crests - not based on any single historical coat of arms, but built using the language and structure of heraldry. Howell is derived from the Welsh Hywel - a name meaning “eminent,” “prominent,” or “notable.” Most famously associated with Hywel Dda (Hywel the Good), the 10th-century Welsh king known for his laws and governance, the name carries a sense of status earned through wisdom rather than force. The shield is divided per bend — diagonally from dexter chief (top left) to sinister base (bottom right). It’s a classic heraldic division that introduces movement and contrast, giving the design a slightly more dynamic feel than a simple vertical or horizontal split. The two fields are gold and red - colours that represent value, authority, and strength. Across the gold field are three castles, arranged diagonally. In heraldic terms, castles often represent strength, defence, and place. In the opposing field sits a sun in splendour - a classic heraldic symbol of clarity, life, and authority. It brings balance to the composition: where the castles are grounded and architectural, the sun is open and radiant. It also subtly echoes the meaning of Hywel — something elevated, visible, and prominent. Bold lines and flat colour keep it consistent with the rest of the series, while the per bend layout gives it a slightly more expressive, less static feel.
