Howell Family Crest Mug - Welsh Heraldry

This mug design forms part of the wider series of modern Welsh surname crests — not based on any single historical coat of arms, but built using the language and structure of heraldry. Howell is derived from the Welsh Hywel, a name whose etymology is commonly linked to meanings such as “eminent,” “prominent,” or “notable.” It is most famously associated with Hywel Dda (Hywel the Good), the tenth-century Welsh ruler remembered for lawmaking and governance. Because of that, the name carries a sense of status earned through judgement and wisdom rather than force alone. The shield is divided per bend — diagonally from dexter chief (upper left from the bearer’s perspective) to sinister base (lower right). This is a classic heraldic partition that introduces movement and contrast, giving the composition a more dynamic feel than a simple vertical or horizontal split. The two fields are gold and red. In heraldic tradition, gold suggests worth, authority and generosity, while red is associated with courage, strength and resolve. Across the gold field sit three castles, arranged diagonally along the bend. Castles commonly symbolise defence, endurance and place, adding a grounded architectural strength to the design. In the opposing field appears a sun in splendour, one of heraldry’s most striking charges. Traditionally it represents clarity, life, power and visibility. Here it balances the composition beautifully: where the castles are solid and terrestrial, the sun is radiant and expansive. It also quietly echoes the meaning of Hywel — something elevated, seen and prominent. Bold lines and flat colour keep the crest visually modern, while the per bend arrangement gives it a slightly more expressive and energetic character than a static quartered shield.
