This design forms part of the wider series of modern Welsh surname crests - not tied to a single historical coat of arms, but built using the visual language of heraldry. John is one of the most enduring names across Wales and beyond. It's derived from the Hebrew Yochanan, meaning “God is gracious.” It's a name that's at the heart of absolutely loads of Welsh surnames (through forms like Ieuan, Ifan, and Siôn). About this particular design. The shield uses a lovely shade of blue (azure), which is a colour traditionally associated with loyalty, truth, and constancy. It’s a steady base - appropriate for a name that underpins so many others. Across the lower section run stylised wave lines. As well as adding balance this is a bit of a nod to baptism and in particular John the Baptist. At the centre is a white dove, carrying an olive branch. This obviously represents the peace, purity, and reconciliation. Above sits a gold chief - a broad band across the top of the shield. In heraldic terms, the chief often signifies authority, honour, or a guiding principle. The composition is balanced and uncluttered - a single central charge, evenly placed between dexter and sinister.
