This mug design forms part of the wider series of modern Welsh surname crests — not tied to a single historical coat of arms, but built using the visual language of heraldry. John is one of the most enduring names across Wales and far beyond. Its etymology comes from the Hebrew Yochanan, meaning “God is gracious.” It also sits at the root of many Welsh names and surnames through forms such as Ieuan, Ifan, and Siôn, giving it a deep and lasting presence in Welsh naming tradition. The shield uses a rich shade of blue (azure), a heraldic colour traditionally associated with loyalty, truth and constancy. It provides a calm, steady foundation — fitting for a name that underpins so many others. Across the lower section run stylised wave lines. As well as adding visual balance, they offer a subtle nod to baptism, and in particular to John the Baptist, whose association with water gives the symbol added relevance. At the centre stands a white dove carrying an olive branch. This well-known emblem traditionally represents peace, purity and reconciliation. It also carries biblical resonance, making it especially suited to a name with sacred origins. Above sits a gold chief — the broad horizontal band across the top of the shield. In heraldic terms, the chief often signifies honour, authority or a guiding principle. The composition is balanced and uncluttered, with a single central charge placed evenly between dexter and sinister. Bold lines and flat colour keep the crest modern, while the symbolism draws confidently on older heraldic and spiritual traditions.
