The Mari Lwyd is one of Wales’s most unusual winter traditions, with a reputation somewhere between folklore and pub crawl. The name is usually translated as “Grey Mare,” and the custom involves a decorated horse’s skull carried from house to house on a pole by a group of singers during Christmas and New Year. At each stop they would begin a pwnco, trading improvised verses with those inside until they were allowed in. Once welcomed, the group received food and drink while the Mari caused some light chaos. The design shows the Mari Lwyd in a bold graphic style, with clear outlines and simple shapes that reflect its eerie but playful nature. A lively graphic inspired by one of Wales’s most distinctive traditions.
