Merched Beca, or “Rebecca’s Daughters,” were the protesters behind the Rebecca Riots, which took place across west and mid-Wales between 1839 and 1843. Farmers and labourers targeted tollgates that imposed heavy charges on local roads, often carrying out their actions dressed as women. This design reworks that period of Welsh history using an anime-inspired panel layout, with scenes arranged like frames from a manga comic. Figures push forward with staffs and tools, confronting tollgate guards in a series of dramatic moments. At the top of the design, the Japanese word 戦い (tatakai), meaning battle or fight, sets the tone and links the uprising with the visual language of Japanese action comics. A striking graphic that blends a dramatic part of Welsh history with bold manga-style storytelling.
