Merched Beca, or “Rebecca’s Daughters,” were the protesters behind the Rebecca Riots, a series of uprisings across west and mid-Wales between 1839 and 1843. Farmers and labourers targeted tollgates that charged heavy fees for using local roads, often carrying out their raids dressed as women. This design reimagines that moment of Welsh history through an anime-inspired panel layout, with scenes arranged like frames from a manga comic. Figures move forward with staffs and tools, confronting tollgate guards in a sequence of dramatic snapshots. At the top, the Japanese word 戦い (tatakai), meaning battle or fight, sets the tone and links the Welsh uprising with the visual language of Japanese action comics.
