The name Swansea is thought to come from the Old Norse “Sveinsey,” meaning “Sveinn’s island.” It reflects the Viking presence along the Welsh coast in the early medieval period, when Scandinavian traders and raiders were active around the mouth of the River Tawe. This design picks up on that idea with a bold Viking character illustration, drawn in a lively cartoon style with strong outlines and clear shapes that give it movement and personality. The word “Sveinsey” sits clearly within the design as a nod to the older Norse name, linking the graphic back to the city’s early history. Today Swansea is known in Welsh as Abertawe, meaning “the mouth of the River Tawe,” while the Norse-influenced name remains in everyday English use.
