This design looks back to the Monico Cinema in Rhiwbina (Cardiff). For almost 70 years it served as a well-known neighbourhood picture house, first opening in 1937 with seating for around 950 people. It showed its share of memorable films over the years - from Jaws: The Revenge and Speed 2: Cruise Control to Waterworld with Kevin Costner. The cinema finally closed in 2003, and the building was later demolished and replaced by flats. The artwork captures the scene with a clear 1980s feel, showing the frontage lit up for an evening showing of Back to the Future - the sort of moment you might revisit with access to a DeLorean and a working flux capacitor. Bold outlines and bright colours keep the illustration simple and graphic, echoing old cinema posters and neon-lit high streets. A nostalgic graphic that revisits a small but memorable part of Cardiff’s local history.
