At the centre of this design is a happy, cartoon-style lemon character, going for a stroll in a pine forest in Pembroke. He's just become a grandfather for the first time, but that's not really relevant. When most people think of Pembroke, they probably picture Pembroke Castle, Henry VII, sea mist rolling in from Freshwater West or eating chips on a harbour wall while fending off a seagull with a serious attitude problem. This image, though, is referencing a different Pembroke — Pembroke Pines in Florida. This USA “Pembroke” can be traced back to Sir Edward J. Reed, a Member of Parliament for Pembroke in the late 19th century, whose land company purchased large areas of Florida. A nearby route became known as Pembroke Road, and when the city was officially incorporated in 1960, its first mayor chose the name Pembroke Pines, inspired by both that link and the pine trees growing in the area. While Pembroke in Cymru is better suited to growing crops like leeks and potatoes, Pembroke Pines sits in a warm, subtropical environment where sandy, well-drained soils and long sunny seasons make it ideal for growing citrus fruit. The design itself keeps things clean and graphic, with bold shapes, limited colour and a layout that echoes classic fruit crate packaging. A fun, retro-inspired design that blends classic produce branding with a place name strongly associated with Cymru — just with a much sunnier twist.
