The etymology of Lloyd comes from the Welsh word llwyd, meaning “grey” - often used to describe age, wisdom, maturity and sometimes complexion. The shield is set on a blue field (azure), traditionally associated with loyalty, truth, and steadiness. It provides a calm, consistent base for the elements above and below. In the centre is a bold silver / grey chevron, rising upward from dexter to sinister. In heraldry, the chevron is often linked to protection, building, and support - sometimes associated with those who construct or uphold. Its upward angle gives the design a sense of lift and structure, almost architectural in feel. Above the chevron sit two simple charges: a star on the dexter side and a crescent on the sinister. The star traditionally represents guidance and aspiration, while the crescent suggests growth and renewal. Together, they create a quiet contrast - fixed light and changing light - balanced evenly across the top of the shield. Below, a grey owl spreads its wings. A natural fit with the meaning of llwyd - owls being associated with wisdom, perception, and watchfulness. A name shaped by time - and a design that reflects it. This design forms part of the wider series of modern Welsh surname crests - not tied to a single historical coat of arms, but built using the visual language of heraldry.
