This mug design forms part of the wider series of modern Welsh surname crests — not tied to a single historical coat of arms, but built using the visual language of heraldry. The etymology of Lloyd comes from the Welsh word llwyd, meaning “grey.” Historically, the word could refer to age, wisdom, maturity and sometimes complexion. It is a name with a sense of experience and time already built into it. The shield is set on a blue field (azure), a heraldic colour traditionally associated with loyalty, truth and steadiness. It provides a calm, consistent base for the elements arranged above and below. At the centre rises a bold silver-grey chevron, climbing upward across the shield. In heraldry, the chevron is often linked with protection, building and support, sometimes associated with those who construct or uphold. Its angular form gives the composition lift and structure, with an almost architectural feel. Above the chevron sit two charges: a star on the dexter side and a crescent on the sinister. The star traditionally represents guidance, aspiration and constancy, while the crescent suggests growth, renewal and change. Together they create a quiet balance — fixed light and changing light set evenly across the upper field. Below spreads a grey owl, an especially fitting symbol for the meaning of llwyd. Owls are long associated with wisdom, perception and watchfulness, making it a natural emblem for a name shaped by maturity and insight. Bold lines and flat colour keep the crest modern, while the symbolism remains rooted in older heraldic traditions. A name shaped by time — and a design that reflects it.
