The Mari Lwyd is one of the more distinctive winter traditions in Wales. The name translates as “Grey Mare,” and the custom centres on a decorated horse’s skull mounted on a pole and carried from house to house by a group of singers during the festive season. The group would knock and begin a pwnco, exchanging improvised verses until they were invited inside. Once admitted, they were given food and drink while the Mari brought a sense of theatre to the gathering. This design presents the Mari Lwyd in a bold graphic style, using clear outlines and simple shapes to capture its eerie and playful character. A lively graphic inspired by a well-known Welsh winter custom.
