The Mari Lwyd is one of Wales’s most unusual traditions / pub crawls. The name is usually translated as “Grey Mare,” and the custom involves a decorated horse’s skull mounted on a pole and carried from house to house by a group of singers during the Christmas and New Year period. The group would traditionally knock on doors and begin a singing contest known as a pwnco, trading improvised verses with the people inside until the Mari and her companions were finally invited in. Once admitted, the visitors were rewarded with food and drink while the Mari caused a bit of theatrical chaos around the room. This design presents the Mari Lwyd in a bold graphic style with clear outlines and simple shapes, capturing the slightly eerie but playful character of the tradition. A cool, lively graphic inspired by one of Wales’s most distinctive winter customs.
