The Mari Lwyd is one of the more unusual winter traditions in Wales. The name translates as “Grey Mare,” and the custom involves a decorated horse’s skull carried on a pole from house to house by a group of singers over Christmas and New Year. They would knock and begin a pwnco, exchanging verses with those inside until they were invited in. Once welcomed, they were given food and drink while the Mari caused a bit of playful disruption.
