This design looks back to the Monico Cinema in Rhiwbina (Cardiff). For almost 70 years the Monico was a much loved neighbourhood picture house. It first opened in 1937 with seating for around 950 people. Think of classic films it would have shown (Jaws: The Revenge, Speed 2: Cruise Control, Highlander II: The Quickening). The building finally closed in 2003, and the buildingwas later demolished and replaced by a block of flats. The artwork captures the scene with a clear 1980s feel, showing the cinema frontage lit up for an evening showing of Back to the Future — the sort of moment you might revisit if you happened to have access to a DeLorean and a functioning flux capacitor. Bold outlines and bright colours keep the illustration simple and graphic, echoing the look of old cinema posters and neon-lit high streets from that era. A nostalgic graphic that revisits a small but memorable piece of Cardiff’s local history.
