Monico Cinema (Rhiwbina, Cardiff) Retro Mug

This design looks back to the Monico Cinema in Rhiwbina (Cardiff). For almost 70 years it was a popular neighbourhood cinema, opening in 1937 with seating for around 950 people. It screened a wide range of films over the years, including Jaws: The Revenge, Speed 2: Cruise Control and Glitter starring Mariah Carey. The cinema closed in 2003, and the building was later replaced by flats. The artwork captures the scene with an 1980s feel, showing the cinema frontage lit for an evening screening of Back to the Future - the kind of moment you might revisit if you had access to a DeLorean and a working flux capacitor. Bold outlines and bright colours keep the illustration clear and graphic, drawing on the look of old cinema posters and neon-lit streets. A nostalgic graphic built around a small but memorable piece of Cardiff’s local history.
