This mug design forms part of the wider series of modern Welsh surname crests — not tied to a single historical coat of arms, but built using the visual language of heraldry. Morgan is often interpreted as meaning “sea-born,” “of the sea,” or “sea chief.” It is one of the oldest and most widely recognised Welsh names, with especially deep roots in the coastal regions of Cymru. The etymology gives the design a natural maritime direction. The shield is set on a blue field (azure), immediately giving it a sea-bound character. In heraldic tradition, blue is associated with loyalty, truth and constancy, while also naturally evoking water and open horizons. Across the base run three stylised wave lines, grounding the composition in the name’s coastal associations and adding movement beneath the central charge. At the centre stands a gold griffin, wings raised and one forepaw lifted. The griffin — part lion, part eagle, which is admittedly an alarming prospect — is one of heraldry’s most powerful creatures. Traditionally it represents strength, vigilance, courage and guardianship. Its placement gives the crest both presence and authority. Above sits a broad gold chief, the horizontal ordinary occupying the upper third of the shield. The chief often signifies honour, leadership and command, making it a fitting element for a name historically associated with Welsh rulers and figures of status. Set within the chief are five small stars, arranged in a horizontal line. In heraldry, stars commonly symbolise guidance, aspiration and constancy. Here they provide a subtle celestial counterpoint to the sea below.
