This mug design forms part of the wider series of Welsh surname crests created in a flat modern style — not tied to any single historical coat of arms, but built using the language and structure of heraldry. The name Owen comes from the Welsh Owain, whose etymology is commonly linked to meanings such as “noble-born,” “well-born,” or “young warrior.” It is a name with particular weight in Cymru through its strong association with Owain Glyndŵr, one of the most significant figures in Welsh history. The shield is divided into four equal quarters, creating a balanced composition in which each section carries its own charge. This quartered arrangement gives the crest variety while maintaining order and symmetry. In the dexter chief (upper left) sits a castle, a traditional symbol of strength, defence and place. Opposite, in the sinister chief, is a helmet, representing readiness, martial tradition and the individual figure of the warrior. In the dexter base (lower left) stands a lion, long associated with courage, authority and command. Here it also echoes the lions used in arms linked with Owain Glyndŵr, giving the design an added historical resonance. In the sinister base, a crown completes the set. Traditionally it symbolises sovereignty, honour and legitimacy, tying the crest back to the name’s associations with Welsh leadership and princely lineage. The palette uses red and gold (gules and or). In heraldic tradition, red represents valour, strength and energy, while gold suggests generosity, worth and status. It is a classic combination — bold, confident and difficult to improve upon.
