At the centre of this design is a happy, cartoon-style lemon character, out for a stroll in a pine forest in Pembroke. He’s recently become a grandfather, though that doesn’t really come into it. When most people think of Pembroke, they picture Pembroke Castle, Henry VII, sea mist rolling in from Freshwater West or eating chips on a harbour wall while keeping an eye on a determined seagull. This design points somewhere else - Pembroke Pines in Florida. The name traces back to Sir Edward J. Reed, an MP for Pembroke in the late 19th century, whose land company bought large areas of Florida. A nearby road became known as Pembroke Road, and when the city was incorporated in 1960, the name Pembroke Pines was chosen, partly for that link and partly for the local pine trees. While Pembroke in Cymru suits crops like leeks and potatoes, Pembroke Pines sits in a warm climate where citrus grows easily. The design keeps things clean and graphic, with bold shapes, limited colour and a layout that echoes classic fruit crate labels. A fun, retro-inspired piece built around a Welsh place name with a sunnier twist.
