This design revisits the Monico Cinema in Rhiwbina (Cardiff). For nearly 70 years it stood as a much-used neighbourhood picture house, opening in 1937 with seating for around 950 people. Across the decades it showed a range of films, including Jaws: The Revenge, Double Dragon, and Problem Child 2. It closed its doors in 2003, and the building was later demolished and replaced by flats. The artwork captures the cinema with a clear 1980s feel, showing the frontage lit for an evening showing of Back to the Future - the sort of scene you might revisit with a DeLorean and a working flux capacitor. Bold outlines and bright colours keep the design simple and graphic, reflecting the look of old cinema posters and neon-lit high streets. A nostalgic graphic built around a small but memorable part of Cardiff’s local history.
