Part of a wider collection of modern Welsh surname crests, this mug design is not based on one particular historical coat of arms. Instead, it is built using traditional heraldic forms, symbolic meaning and a bit of good old-fashioned Welsh brain power. The name Rhys comes from the Old Welsh Ris, generally understood to mean “ardour,” “enthusiasm,” or “fiery spirit.” It is a name carried by Welsh rulers and leaders, including Rhys ap Gruffydd, and has long been associated with energy, authority and presence. The shield is set on a red field (gules) framed by a gold border (or). In heraldic tradition, red represents valour, intensity and action, while gold suggests status, generosity and distinction. It is a bold pairing, well suited to the meaning and history of the name. At the centre sit crossed swords, positioned in saltire. This classic heraldic charge traditionally represents readiness, resolve and martial strength — not aggression for its own sake, but the idea of being prepared, alert and capable when required. Beneath them rises a stylised flame, reinforcing the meaning of the name itself: heat, energy, passion and inner drive. It also gives the composition a natural point of origin, from which the rest of the design rises. The layout is centralised and contained, with no divisions or ordinaries interrupting the field. Instead, everything builds upward from flame to swords, creating a clear vertical structure. Bold lines and flat colour keep the crest modern, while the symbolism remains rooted in older heraldic tradition.
