Part of a wider collection of modern Welsh surname crests, this design isn’t based on one particular historical coat of arms. Instead we've put it together drawing on traditional heraldic forms and a bit of good old fashioned Welsh brain power. The name Rhys comes from the Old Welsh Ris, generally understood to mean “ardour,” “enthusiasm,” or “fiery spirit.” It’s a name carried by Welsh princes and leaders, for instance Rhys ap Gruffydd. It has long been associated with energy, authority, and presence. The shield is built on a red (gules) field, framed by a gold (or) border. Red in heraldry represents valour, intensity, and action, while gold suggests status, generosity, and distinction. So it's a combination that suits the name’s meaning. At the centre you've got some crossed swords - positioned in saltire of course. A classic heraldic charge, the swords represent readiness, conflict, and martial strength - not aggression for its own sake, but the idea of being prepared (like Bear Grylls). Underneath is a stylised flame, reinforcing the meaning of the name itself - that sense of heat, energy, and inner drive. The layout is centralised and contained - no divisions or ordinaries interrupt the field. Instead, everything builds upward from the flame to the swords, creating a clear vertical structure.
