This piece belongs to a series of modern Welsh surname crests - not replicas of a particular historic crest, but original designs built using relevant heraldic symbolism. Richards comes from the name Richard, popular in Britain after the Norman Conquest and widely adopted in Wales. It's a name that combines Germanic elements meaning “power,” “rule,” and “bravery,” so is often interpreted as “strong ruler.” Over time, ap Richard (son of Richard) and related forms settled into the surname Richards, carrying that sense of authority forward. The shield is set on a purple (purpure) field, a colour traditionally associated with nobility, dignity, and status. It’s less common than red or blue in heraldry, which gives the design a slightly more elevated, distinctive feel. Cutting across the centre is a chunky silver chevron (argent). As an ordinary, the chevron is often linked to protection, structure, and the idea of building or supporting. In the dexter chief (top left) you've got an orb - a traditional symbol of authority and dominion, often associated with monarchs. Opposite, in the sinister chief, you've got a crown, reinforcing that same theme. We've taken a sort of belt and braces approach, really hammering home the idea of power and leadership. Below the chevron, is a gold lion. The lion represents courage and strength.
