This design is part of a series of modern Welsh surname crests. It is not taken from any one historical shield, but instead built by bringing together the meaning of the name with familiar heraldic symbolism. Thomas is derived from the Aramaic t’oma, meaning “twin.” The name spread widely across Wales following the growth of Christianity and became one of the most enduring personal names in Welsh life. The shield is set on a blue field (azure), a heraldic colour traditionally associated with loyalty, truth and constancy. It provides a calm and steady background for the central elements. Running vertically through the middle is a broad gold pale (or), dividing the shield into dexter and sinister halves. In heraldry, the pale often represents strength, unity and a central path. Here it works especially well with the meaning of the name, creating a clear axis between two balanced sides. On either side of the pale stand two white swans, mirrored across the shield. Their placement reinforces the idea of duality — balanced, inward-facing and reflective of one another. Swans in heraldic tradition are associated with grace, loyalty and quiet strength, often linked to calm waters and composed presence. Beneath them run stylised silver wave lines, grounding the composition across the base of the shield. These add movement and balance while complementing the swans above. Bold lines and flat colour keep the crest modern, while the symbolism remains rooted in older heraldic tradition. It is a design built around symmetry, steadiness and the idea of two held in balance.
