This design centres on a sweet little cat dressed in traditional Welsh costume. The artwork uses soft, rounded forms, neat lines and a very restrained set of colours - black hat, red top and patterned apron, all arranged cleanly against a bright background. The costume itself is inspired by traditional Welsh dress once associated with rural communities in the 18th and 19th centuries, and now most often seen on Dydd Gŵyl Dewi, school photo days, or when someone has entered a highly competitive dawnsio gwerin contest in a side street near Ebbw Vale. The tall hat especially has become an instantly recognisable symbol, even if its annual workload is fairly light. There’s a quiet humour to the whole thing. Cats already move through life as if they represent something larger than themselves, so the addition of national costume feels entirely appropriate.
