Merched Beca, meaning “Rebecca’s Daughters,” were the group behind the Rebecca Riots, a series of protests across west and mid-Wales between 1839 and 1843. Farmers and labourers focused on tollgates that charged high fees for local roads, often carrying out attacks while dressed as women. This design revisits that period of Welsh history through an anime-style panel layout, with scenes arranged like a manga strip. Figures advance with staffs and tools, facing off against tollgate guards across a series of bold snapshots. At the top, the Japanese word 戦い (tatakai), meaning battle or fight, sets the tone, linking the Welsh uprising with the style of Japanese action comics. A striking graphic that brings together a dramatic part of Welsh history with manga-inspired storytelling.
