This mug design forms part of a wider collection of modern Welsh surname crests — not taken from any single historical coat of arms, but created by combining the meaning of the name with traditional heraldic symbolism. The name Williams comes from “ap William,” meaning “son of William.” The etymology of William traces back to the Germanic Willahelm, usually understood as “resolute protector” or “determined guardian.” Over time, ap William softened into Williams, now one of the most widespread surnames in Wales. It is also among the most common surnames in the United States — which is a considerable number of Williamses. The shield is divided horizontally, with a green chief across the top and a red field below, separated by a decorative gold band. In heraldry, the chief is a position of honour, often reserved for the most significant symbol within the composition. Set within the chief is a silver sword, lying horizontally. The sword traditionally represents protection, readiness, justice and authority, directly reflecting the meaning of William as a guardian and defender. Beneath it runs the gold band, finished with a repeating triangular motif. This detailing suggests fortification and strength, recalling stylised battlements or defensive architecture. It adds a subtle visual nod to resilience and protection. In the lower half, upon the red field (gules), appears a helmeted knight’s head. This introduces a human element to the design: not merely the concept of defence, but the figure who embodies it. The knight symbolises duty, service, discipline and courage. The colour palette reinforces the theme throughout: green (vert) for growth, stability and grounded strength, red (gules) for courage, resolve and action, gold (or) for honour and clarity, and silver (argent) for truth and integrity. Bold lines and flat colour keep the crest modern, while every element points back to the core meaning of the name.
